The European Fisheries Technology Platform (EFTP) celebrated its General Assembly the 24th November. Click here to read the conclusions

The last 15th of March, a delegation of EFTPs’ (European Fisheries Technology Platform) Board of Directors met with the European Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Ms. Maria Damanaki. The aim of the meeting was to make the EFTP available for the Commissioner and for DG Mare and to show the progress achieved in this organization.

The European Fisheries Technology Platform has been presented  during the industrial fair “Navalia”. This initiative will coordinate the R&D policies in the fishery sector in the European countries.

The President of Europeche Javier Garat assured this issue during the presentation of the Platform. He was accompanied by the Conselleira del Mar of the Galician government Rosa Quintana

Garat affirmed that “The European Commission stimulated the creation of this Platform in order to have the coordination among the R&D initiatives of the different countries and for the individual initiatives to be shared”

The President of Europeche remembered that “the European fishery sector manifest exploitation’s high costs and it suffers from the consequences of low fish prices and the crisis”.

Among the platform’s objectives Javier Garat emphasized the importance of providing a common European approaching in R&D”, also it is important to offer a long term view in fisheries technologies, to reach a consensus of a route map and an agenda in future researches, as well as to mobilize a community of public and private resources in order to be able to carry out these activities

He also said that “research programs are necessary and we must achieve they will help to the relationships among the enterprises”.

Furthermore, he said that enterprises in the sector, scientific organization in EU, universities, public administration or trade union will have the opportunity to participate in the Platform. He pleads for a flexible organization that will let to react to the fishery sector necessities in R&D.

 Rosa Quintana commented that the fishery activities have to keep up with the times in order to get advantages of competitors.

The Conselleira also said that we share the worry and the interest for the future maritime and fishery’s activities in Europe.

Quintana also pleads for “the innovation and the competitive”, and she stated that Navalia and E-Fishing are a good example for the necessity of work together in order to advance.

As the fishery Autonomic responsible stated “to join synergies” will help to save resources in order to aim at the future.
